Thesis Topic: Does writing and reading Trauma Fiction facilitate post-traumatic growth?

The thesis is comprised of a critical exegesis that uses Trauma Theory to look at how the trauma story works and to what value for the reader and writer in relation to posttraumatic growth. The creative component includes the novel, ‘Triggered’, an adult survivor of childhood trauma coming of age story.

Thesis Title: Variations of Difference.

The critical component of this thesis concentrates on the work of Janet Frame as works of ‘mental difference’ rather than ‘mental illness’ and the creative component is part of a novella length fiction engaging with this concept of thinking, perceiving and behaving differently. It’s titled, ‘Collage.’

Writing for Readers: preparing for publication beyond the academy. Program held at the University of Melbourne, July 2009.

Received mentoring from Christos Tsiolkas on how to structure and develop novel in progress ‘The Light Inside’ 2009. He referred to me as a ‘terrific writer’ and the novel to have ‘the potential to be very powerful.’

Selected to participate in the Novel Writing Master Class with Antoni Jach in January 19-23rd & 28thFeburary 2009 (Sponsored by the Grace Marion Wilson Trust Fund) through the Victorian Writers Centre and again in December 1st-5th 2010.Fellow participants: Alison Goodman, Jane Sullivan, Toni Jordan, Leah Kaminsky, Simmone Howell, Lyndell Caffrey and Mathew Hooper

Received mentoring for non-fiction writing from Sophie Cunningham 2010. This resulted in a memoir piece titled ‘These places have rules that aren’t written anywhere’ published in Meanjin 2011.

Attended Robert McKee’s Seminars on Story, June 17-20th and Genre 24-26th 2011. In addition to this, I am a continuing student on ‘Storylogue.’

Attended Micheal Hauge Advanced Story Mastery March 24th 2012.
